The death of George Floyd sparked protests across the country, some of which unfortunately including looting and vandalism. In his first public comments since the protests started, San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich supported the Black Lives Matter movement while going for Donald Trump’s jugular in a fiery conversation with Dave Zirin.
Popovich unloaded on Trump and prominent Republicans like Mitch McConnell, Ted Cruz, and Lindsey Graham for their actions, or lack thereof, pertaining to the recent protests. He even went as far as to call Trump “deranged” and “unfit” to be president.

Scathing, sure, and certainly much more powerful than anything we’ve seen from our nation’s legislative bodies. Rather than offer some sort of statement and/or call for unity and peace, all that we’ve seen out of Washington are inflammatory tweets.
During the Trump administration, Popovich and Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, a Popovich disciple, have taken shots at the president at every available opportunity, and the recent protests gave Popovich a bit more venom.

Before you tell Popovich to stick to sports, he is an Air Force Academy graduate who had nearly a half-decade of active service. If anyone in the NBA has the ethos to critique the president, it’s him.
